Project Management

Project management methods or methodologies are systematic approaches to running a project. They really act as a huge check list of things to do to try and help achieve success. Rigorously following a method will not guarantee success but it will mitigate a disaster.

Some methods just cover the project management part:

others just the development lifecycle (taking an idea to a finished product)

and some combine the two and have the project management activities hardwired into the development lifecycle (eg SAP's ASAP)
